European Council in Brussels | Prime Minister’s statement
PRIME MINISTER
PRESS OFFICE
June 23, 2011
G. PAPANDREOU: First of all, Greece is committed, strongly committed, to continue a very difficult but important programme for major changes, radical changes, to make our economy viable.
The Greek people have shown tremendous commitment, strength and effort. This is a fight for the Greek people. This is a fight for Greece, for our country, but it’s also a fight for a common European currency and a common Europe.
So we are on path and we are decided, and expect that the European Union also will create the efficient framework to deal with this crisis, and also deal with a number of the systemic problems we’ve been seeing over the past months in the eurozone.
And if we do so, then we can be optimistic we were on a different path. Thank you very much.
QUESTION: (away from microphone)
G. PAPANDREOU: I think that, with a strong commitment from the European Union, that there will be also a strong commitment from the Greek Parliament that we move forward together.
QUESTION: (away from microphone)
G. PAPANDREOU: We should always be prepared in democracies for the will of our deputies and of course our administrative procedures. But as I said, I believe that if there is a strong commitment from the European Union there will be a strong commitment from Greece at the same time.
